Wow! I can't believe how clean this 1980 Gibson Hummingbird is. It was obviously very well taken care of and still shines like new. The guitar was produced at the original Gibson factory in Kalamazoo Michigan, U.S.A. on a Thursday, September 18th 1980. That was the day that a worker at the Damascus Arkansas ICBM missile complex accidentally dropped a 3" socket 80 feet down the missile silo and the socket ricocheted off of a blaster shield and penetrated a Titan II missile's lower fuel cell. In short, rocket fuel leak is bad. When there is a 9-megaton nuclear warhead involved with said rocket-situation gets pretty tense. You can read all about that and Willie Wilson's amazing record-breaking stolen base streak as well as other exciting things that happened that day. But back to this amazing guitar that was born on that beautiful September day... The guitar is in exceptional condition. It has no breaks, no repairs, no funny business. It has been set up and it is ready to go-it needs nothing. Guitar appears to be 100% original.
The body is very solid with no creaks or issues whatsoever. The finish is bright and vibrant-a bit darker and more elegant than a modern reissue version. The pickguard is super flat and in amazing condition. The top is flat as a pancake with no lift or any issues. The binding is clean front and back. There is a tiny dimple in the finish on the face and a few faint line rubs on the backside-difficult to see-view photos. The neck angle is excellent and the neck joint is perfect. There is a strap pin on the inside of the neck heel-which may be original or maybe not. I see Hummingbirds from this era with both versions commonly. The neck itself is super straight and smooth. The neck profile is a vintage C-shape. The nut is the desirable 1 11/16" width. The neck depth measures .840" at the 1st fret and 1.000" at the 10th fret. The tuners all function smoothly and the guitar stays in tune perfectly. The serial number is clean and crisp and reads easily. Below it is the “second” stamp that Gibson seemed to use a lot of for tax reasons-like most others that have this stamp, I can not find any flaws whatsoever that would necessitate it. The headstock and logo display excellent-near new condition. The truss rod turns smoothly and looks like new-see photos. There is an employee inspection initial inside the truss rod recess-pretty cool! The Rosewood fingerboard is clean and feels smooth and soft. The block position markers are in excellent shape. The frets have been crowned and polished and they present like-new condition-see photos. The action is set medium-low for a fast and easy action. The string height measures .010" at the 1st fret and .085" at the 12th fret. The guitar plays great up and down the fingerboard. There are no dead spots whatsoever. The action can be easily lowered by sanding the bottom of the saddle, or raised with a saddle shim if you prefer a different action. As it is, it plays great and has a big tone with an incredible volume.
This guitar is lightweight and fun to play. It is really in excellent condition-thank you to the previous owner, who purchased it new and always kept it stored properly. Comes with a vintage Lo Duca Bros. vintage chipboard case that has a cool blue felt interior.
