Yes! It is THAT guitar. Vintage 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom in the most Rock & Roll finish ever: Ebony (Black!). With this guitar at your fingertips-the world is yours...You can not get any more cooler no matter what you do. Just look at it. This Guitar was made at the Gibson factory in Nashville Tennessee, U.S.A. on Thursday December 7th 1978 (Pearl Harbor day!). The guitar is in great condition and has been well cared for over its 47 years. It has no breaks, no cracks, no repairs. It has been professionally set up and it is ready to go-it needs nothing.
The body is the familiar mahogany single cutaway shape with set neck construction. The "ebony" finish looks killer from any angle and is very well complimented by the gold hardware. The finish is in good condition and shows signs of handling. It has that soft vintage gloss that looks so good...not cloudy at all like some of these guitars are. The black is deep and shiny. There are a couple of paint flakes directly underneath the bridge-they are very small and hidden by the bridge mostly. The hardware has patina all over-and it matches the aging of the guitar everywhere. The backside is pretty clean as well and the deluxe binding is in great shape front and back. The neck joint is solid and an excellent fitment. The neck angle is perfect.
The neck itself is a Maple construction and it is perfectly straight with a very smooth feel. The neck measures 1.69" wide at the nut. The neck profile is best described as a Slim-Medium shape and it measures .796" deep at the 1st fret and .987" deep at the 12th fret. The tuners all function smoothly and the guitar stays in tune. The headstock and logo display excellent with nice patina. The pearl block position markers are nice and shiny and in excellent condition. The Ebony fingerboard is clean and nice also. The frets have been professionally leveled crowned and polished. The appear close to new condition-see photos. The action is set low for an easy playing experience. The string height is set at .010" at the 1st fret and .045" at the 12th fret. It is easily raised if you prefer that. As it is-the guitar plays lights out up and down the fingerboard with no dead spots. It responds really well-even with a light touch. Very fun to pull bends everywhere on this baby.
The pickups are the original Patent Stamped units and both have an excellent signal. The neck measures 7.39 Ohms and the Bridge position measures 7.37 Ohms...very well balanced. The whole harness and circuit is in great condition. The original potentiometers date to the 11th week and 30th week of 1978. The controls turn freely and quietly. The pickguard is nice and flat and stable. The bridge and tailpiece both have slight corrosion that matches the age of the guitar.
The guitar weighs 10.83 lbs and yes, it rocks.
This guitar is pretty much the quintessential "1970's Les Paul Custom" and it represents a highly collectible and super desirable hallmark of the Gibson heritage. It would make an excellent addition to anyone's collection and sounds great in the studio, plays great in live performance settings and just looks really really good sitting around the house.
Comes with original "protector" case-which is in decent condition and missing one latch but functions as a good protective home for your new #1.
