This vintage 1967 Gibson J-45 has a vibrant and brilliant Cherry Sunburst. But She's not just a pretty face-NO! This Soft Shouldered Gibson features a Rosewood bridge which really opens up the tone and lets the solid Spruce top sing. The Original plastic bridge with the ceramic adjustable saddle is long gone, and we thank whoever did that. Now this acoustic breathes just like a pre-1963 version and sounds totally killer. This unit was Crafted in 1967 at the original Gibson factory in Kalamazoo Michigan, U.S.A. The quality and vintage Gibson appointments are apparent throughout-the guitar is super solid with no creaks, rattles, repairs, or funny business. It has been professionally set up and it is ready to go-it needs nothing.
The body is the familiar solid Spruce top with Mahogany sides and back. White binding accents the bright and unfaded Cherry Red Sunburst finish-it's the perfect compliment. The finish has light handling evidence all over-see photos. The finish is nice and glossy and still shines great with that perfect vintage gloss. The lacquer is checked everywhere-an excellent indicator that this guitar produces a vibrant sonic tone-unrestricted and dynamic. The checking is fairly subtle at some angles and more exaggerated in others-see photos. It has a really cool vintage vibe for sure. The top grain is clean and well defined. The top is flat as is the original pickguard. The binding is clean and solid everywhere. The neck joint is solid and an excellent fitment.
The neck itself is straight and smooth. The truss rod still has factory black paint on it and turns smoothly. The neck angle is perfect. The neck has the slim fast-C profile and measures 1.58" wide at the nut. The neck depth measures .830" at the 1st fret and 1.010" at the 10th fret. There is a small (less than 1/4" diameter) paint touch up on the heel-appears to be a prior strap pin location. It is a cosmetic that is fairly unnoticeable and disappears in certain lighting-see photos. The neck feels really nice and easy to hold. The original tuners all function smoothly (those open-back chrome tuners were only used by Gibson during late 1966 and early 1967.) The headstock and logo display excellent with the perfect vintage vibe and patina-see photos. The Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard feels soft and smooth and has some beautiful high contrast grain-see photos. The frets have been professionally leveled-crowned and polished. They look really nice and crisp-see photos. The action is nice and low for an easy and fast playing experience. This guitar plays like a modern electric! The string height is .010" at the 1st fret and .050" at the 12th fret! That is seriously low and unheard of for an acoustic. There are no dead spots anywhere and zero fret buzz when played with normal strumming pressure. Of course you can easily raise the string height with a saddle shim-if you should desire a higher action. As it is-it plays like butter and just fells incredible.
The tone has an excellent projection with that full Gibson warm and woody sound. The Midrange is exceptional and the low-end thump is perfect. These guitars are known for their intimate sound and this one doesn't disappoint. The volume is really good too, and the overall exceptional tone can be attributed directly to the rosewood bridge. This is one of those guitars that you will want to play and play and never set back down. It is a lot of fun and perfect for songwriting-stage-playing, and certainly recording-where it just blows everything else away. It has an incredible soul.
Ok-that's enough fan action for now. This vintage Gibson comes with a 1980's Gibson Hardcase. The case is nice and functions well-the handle wrap-protector thread is beginning to unravel but isn't in the way or anything. The interior is a cool Dark Purple-Blue that looks really cool around the Cherry Sunburst.
