This vintage 1967 Gibson EB-2DC bass guitar is in great condition and the original cherry red stain is vibrant and beautiful. The EB-2 model was introduced in 1958 as the semi-hollow body design with a 30.5" scale neck and the 'DC' model designated 'double pickup/ cherry finish' which first appeared in 1965. This unit was produced at the original Gibson factory in Kalamazoo Michigan, U.S.A. most likely in 1967 although it could be a 1966 year model as the serial numbers overlap. The bass has a professional headstock repair-which is only visible on the backside-it did not go all the way through. The repair is solid and does not affect the playability or tuning-it is just a cosmetic. It appears to be 100% original, and looks, feels and plays great.
The body is in very nice condition. The original Cherry Red stained finish is vibrant and bright. The finish exhibits line checking and other typical wear and tear here and there-overall it is a great looking vintage guitar with all the mojo, look and feel that we all love vintage guitars for. The body structure features a set neck design and everything is nice and solid with no creaks or issues. The neck fitment is excellent and the neck angle is perfect. The neck itself is straight and has a nice smooth feel. The neck measures 1.50" at the nut. The neck profile is best described as a vintage C shape and it measures .885" & 1.005" deep at the 1st and 12th frets, respectively. The tuners all turn freely and the bass stays in tune. The headstock and logo display nicely with a great vintage patina-see photos. The nut has a small piece missing between the middle strings, but it functions just fine and looks to be the original piece so we kept it right where it belongs. The Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard is a nice tight-grain with beautiful contrast and it feels nice and soft with a velvety touch. The frets have been professionally leveled, crowned and polished to a clean vintage look. They appear near new height and have a perfect shape-see photos. The bass appears to have always been used with flat wound strings-so that's probably why they are in such unbelievable condition...The string height is fairly low for a an easy playing experience. The string height is currently .010" & .090" at the 1st & 12th frets, respectively. The bass plays nicely up and down the fingerboard with no dead spots anywhere. It is a lot of fun to play-whether plugged in or just acoustically. A new set of round wounds would really make this bass come alive-but we elected to keep it 'old skool' with the flat wounds for a vintage look and feel.
The pickups both have a strong signal and nice balance. The original 3-way switch works well. The push-button with is the original Gibson unit which they marketed as a "Baritone Switch"...it basically boosts the signal, which also boosts the bass frequencies. The controls all function as they should and even the original string mute is present. The bridge pickup cover has been removed (always in the way). The original pickguard is nice and flat and in excellent condition.
The bass is a lot of fun to play and sits nicely in your lap. It is pretty lightweight and only weighs 8.72 lbs. You can play all night with this baby and not get shoulder fatigue.
The original Gibson form fit hard case is included for protection and it is in good condition.
This is a great vintage Gibson bass for someone who wants to play and enjoy themselves, while everyone else watches.
